“It is important to understand that auto shows are basically sales tools for manufacturers: put vehicles in front of a car-buying public and hope they decide to buy one of yours. An obvious point perhaps, but if the show is in a location that doesn’t buy a lot of the carmaker’s products, spending the cash to attend the show is likely a bad investment. Car sales in Detroit are still dominated by the domestic carmakers, hence their massive footprint and presence in Detroit.” source...
