I am surprised that UAV pilots live state side rather than closer to the conflict. It seems to me, it would be useful for them to have facetime with the engineers who maintain their UAVs, not to mention having a few ms shorter ping times to their drones.

Ping times do not matter much as they control multiple UAV's at a time anyway. It is more like playing starcraft than actually piloting a plane.

Then the solution is clear. Get an Ender's game type program going to train pilots from a young age on a far away asteroid.
